A Landmark Year on Track - Update from Paddy Twomey Racing
Good morning all, and thank you for taking the time to read our September newsletter.
The yard continues to enjoy a productive season, with a series of notable performances contributing to what is now our best ever campaign in terms of winners trained.
Guineas Prospect Black Caviar Gold wins the Weld Park Stakes
Classic Dreams for Black Caviar Gold
After a striking maiden win at Cork, Bond Thoroughbred’s Black Caviar Gold (Havana Grey) took another significant step forward with victory in the G3 Weld Park Stakes at The Curragh.
A 270,000gns Tattersalls Book 1 purchase, she travelled strongly under Billy Lee and quickened decisively inside the final furlong to score by 2¾ lengths from Pivotal Attack.
She has proven herself an exciting prospect for her connections, with real Classic potential and the ability to keep us all dreaming throughout the winter and into next season.
Deepone Powers to 9-Length Concorde Stakes Victory
Deepone produced a commanding performance to land the Listed Concorde Stakes at Tipperary by 9 lengths.
Racing prominently throughout, the Study of Man colt travelled powerfully and “put them to the sword” in the final furlong, scoring with authority under Billy Lee.
Billy commented: “That was a good performance, and he put them to the sword well. He likes to pour on the pressure and have them at it early. The ground helped as well.”
He looks set to feature in the upcoming Tattersalls horse in training sale.
Billy Lee Back On Track After Injury
Earlier in the month, Billy Lee returned from a broken collarbone at Galway, riding both Iowa City and La Isla Mujeres to victories on the same card.
On his first ride back, he delivered Ballylinch Stud’s Iowa City with a perfectly timed finish to secure her first win for the yard. Following up with an excellent third in the Navigation Stakes at Cork last week, she looks set to build on her two-year-old promise.
Later in the day, Billy partnered La Isla Mujeres to a commanding success in the Listed Oyster Stakes in the Moyglare Stud silks. Thriving on the softer conditions, she now can be aimed at bigger targets, with the Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot on Champions Day firmly in mind.
Yellowstone Lake & Naples Break Maiden Tags
Yellowstone Lake and Naples both broke their maidens in recent weeks.
Irish 1000 Guineas entry Yellowstone Lake impressed at Dundalk, travelling smoothly before asserting late to win comfortably on the all-weather. She looks a filly with plenty of potential and another to follow closely next year.
Meanwhile, Naples faced a slightly more testing passage at Listowel but quickened smartly to land his maiden by a neck. Following promising efforts in prior runs, this was another step forward for the Mehmas gelding, who will also feature in the Tattersalls Horses In Training Sale later this month.
One Look Holds Her Own in Group 1 Company
One Look put in a big performance to finish third in yesterday’s Prix de l’Opera, demonstrating the consistency that has marked her campaign this year.
She travelled well throughout and was doing her best work in the finish, beaten by less than a quarter of a length in a thrilling finish.
She continues to provide excitement and pride for all involved in her campaign, with future plans to be carefully considered by Wathnan Racing and the team.
