Paddy Twomey
Based at Athassel House in Golden, County Tipperary, Paddy Twomey has established himself as one of Ireland’s best flat trainers. Born in Cork, his passion for horse racing emerged early, breeding his first Group 1 winner from a mare purchased with his Communion money at just 13 years old.
A graduate of the pinhooking business, Paddy began training under a restricted license in 2012. His first runner, Hunting Goddess, won at Dundalk just days later with Billy Lee aboard. It was the start of a partnership that has become one of the most trusted and enduring in Irish racing. Billy, now the stable’s retained jockey, brings vast experience, consistency, and an in-depth understanding of every horse in the yard.
Since gaining his full license in 2016, Paddy has steadily developed his operation from what was originally a stud farm without even a gallop into a purpose-built training facility where quality is always paramount.
With approximately 100 stables on site, the focus remains firmly on quality over quantity. This streamlined approach ensures every horse receives the attention needed to fulfil its potential. It also allows Paddy to maintain an exceptional standard of work rider, with many former jockeys riding out each morning—an invaluable asset to each horse’s progression.
This training philosophy has underpinned years of success. Paddy consistently operates with one of the highest strike rates in the country while competing at the top level and securing big race wins season after season.
The 2025 campaign has continued that trajectory, delivering his best-ever tally of 43 winners, once again among the highest strike rates nationwide. Highlights include a memorable Royal Ascot triumph with Carmers in the Queen’s Vase, a first French winner courtesy of the Moyglare Stud-owned La Isla Mujeres, and the ever-reliable filly One Look showcasing her quality across Europe.
Despite a packed racing calendar, Paddy never steps back from his roots at the sales. Throughout the winter months he is a constant presence on the sales circuit, attending every major auction and methodically rebuilding the team for the season ahead. His eye for a young horse remains one of his greatest strengths, and each winter is spent searching for the next star to elevate Athassel House Stud to new heights.
