Carmers on Course for St Leger - August Update from Paddy Twomey Racing
Good afternoon everyone, and thank you for taking the time to read our August newsletter.
As we look ahead to the Autumn campaign, excitement is growing with Classic ambitions for Carmers, a talented team of fillies emerging, and the welcome addition of Wathnan Racing to the yard.
Carmers Builds on Classic Hopes at York
Carmers dropped back to a mile and a half in last week’s Group 2 Great Voltigeur — the shortest trip of his career — and we were delighted with how he ran.
Having travelled strongly throughout, he stayed on powerfully up the straight, and finished a close second in a race stacked with quality, including a dual Derby winner.
On figures, it was the best run of his career to date. His unbeaten streak came to an end, but when competing at this level that’s only natural — most importantly, he’s still progressing and showing he belongs at the very top.
We see it as the perfect trial for the St Leger at Doncaster next month. He’s in great form, continues to improve, and we’re excited to think he can go there and be right in the mix.
One Look to Race for Wathnan Racing
This month, Wathnan Racing have added One Look to their exciting team of horses.
A star filly who provided the Connolly Racing Syndicate with plenty of memorable moments, we are thrilled to have Wathnan Racing on board and look forward to continuing her success for new connections.
Super Sox Strikes Twice in Platinum Stakes
The aptly named Super Sox looks set to be one to watch this Autumn after securing her second consecutive Platinum Stakes at Cork this month.
In a closely contested finish, the imposing daughter of Showcasing was brave to come out on top, and looks to have plenty more to give for connections.
While she has the class to perform well over six furlongs, her performance at Cork suggests seven could be her ideal trip. The Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster is firmly on the radar.
Elana Osario Secures a Big-Race Double at Cork
Elana Osario secured a big-race double at Cork by winning the feature Group 3 Give Thanks Stakes under Colin Keane for owner Robert JW Moran.
Having made her debut on this card 12 months ago, the daughter of Lope De Vega continues to improve with each run. She had to battle, stepping up from handicaps to beat a filly who had finished third in an Oaks, and we’re delighted she rose to the challenge.
Her strong finishing speed suggests she has plenty of versatility trip-wise and remains an exciting prospect for the rest of the season and into her five-year-old campaign.
Ledecky Scores at Tramore for Paul Byrne
It was fantastic to see Ledecky break her maiden on her second start at Tramore for owner Paul Byrne.
Under a confident ride from the talented apprentice Nicola Burns, the daughter of Wootton Bassett delivered as expected and looks set to be an fun filly for her connections going forward.
New Acquisitions at the Arqana August Sale
Amid a busy week of winners, the next generation of stars was also front of mind as we attended the Arqana August Yearling Sale in Deauville.
In what was a strong sale with all the major players active, it was pleasing to secure our two targeted lots for their ambitious owners.
First came Lot 50, a daughter of Mehmas consigned by Haras Du Cadran, purchased to race in the Bond Thoroughbred Limited silks. That decision already looks well justified, with the dam’s first runner, Constitution River, landing the Group 2 Futurity Stakes at the Curragh last weekend.
Later in the evening, we added Lot 78, a striking daughter of Sea The Stars from the Ecurie Des Monceaux draft, for owner Robert Moran. Out of a full-sister to Group 3 winner Arabian Crown and a half-sister to multiple Group winner and Group 1-placed The Juliet Rose, she looks an exciting addition to an already strong team of fillies for her connections.
